Differentiating Strategic Capabilities key to talent management in oil & gas sector
“The key to strategic talent management for the oil & gas industry is to identify, develop and maintain the key capabilities needed to meet strategic objectives” says Stephen Brooks, Director of Oxford Strategic Consulting, “in particular, every organization can build ‘differentiating strategic capabilities (DiSCs) to provide real and sustainable competitive advantage”. Stephen has been invited to discuss how senior HR leaders of the oil & gas industry can utilise DiSCs for strategic talent management during the Oil & Gas HR Summit in London on Wednesday, the 15th of October.
Mr. Brooks will explain the key criteria for high impact DiSCs and how advanced organisations have used them to achieve significant strategic success. The Diwan of the Royal Court of Oman and Jumeirah Group each worked with Oxford Strategic Consulting to first identify strategic capabilities within their respective sectors and industries and then to develop these key capabilities needed to maximise the impact of each organisations’ human resources.
As the foundation for advanced leadership development, these strategic capabilities have proven an invaluable component in helping the Diwan of the Royal Court of Oman and its teams serve the people and government of Oman.
“OSC identified the crucial people capabilities we need to maximise performance. The results were extremely valuable and surprising. We now have complete confidence that the capabilities we recruit and train for are absolutely the right ones to achieve our challenging goals,” said Dr. Ali Qassim Jawad Al-Lawati from the Diwan.
OSC research found that DiSCs must be rare, hard to copy, valuable and exclusively human capabilities. Not every comparable organisation can possess these capabilities, nor can other organisations acquire or build them easily. Moreover, the DiSCs must provide a significant advantage and strategic effectiveness. Finally, DiSCs are entirely human capabilities – which excludes IT, capital or assets that can be bought or copied.
